The Flemish Government has recognised the Bruges Public Library as part of the national cultural heritage, the City of Bruges said on Monday. This recognition enables the institution to receive an additional annual subsidy of €250,000.
The library houses a heritage collection including, among other things, medieval manuscripts, ancient writings, the archives of 19th Century priest and poet Guido Gezelle, and historical newspapers.
Following a positive opinion from a committee of experts, Flemish Minister-President and Minister of Culture Jan Jambon (N-VA) awarded the library the title of cultural heritage organisation at the national level.
“Both for the collection itself, its contents and management, and for research and public relations, we have received very good scores from the expert committee," said Bruges Alderman for Culture Nico Blontrock.
“This is great recognition for the work of the scientific staff (…) but also for the people involved in raising awareness and educating the public, as well as for all the employees of Bruges Library,” he added.
