Fire breaks out at Flemish recycling plant

A fire broke out at a recycling plant in the Flemish municipality of Westerlo on Saturday evening. No injuries have been reported.

The incident occurred at the MRS Reyclcing plant in Oevel, just outside Westerlo. Heavy smoke could be seen on the horizon from several miles away. The fire brigade urged local residents to keep their doors and windows closed due to the potentially hazardous smoke.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control, but the surrounding area is still heavily affected by smoke, the local fire brigade announced.

In the evening , at around 23:30, the fire brigade said that the fire had not ignited toxic materials, but construction and household waste.
