Belgium is working alongside the United States to evacuate Belgian citizens from besieged Gaza, potentially via Egypt, Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne told VTM Nieuws on Sunday.
The crossing points between Gaza and Israel are currently closed, but Belgium is looking to extract its citizens via the Rafah crossing in southern Gaza. Other nations, such as the UK and France, are also petitioning Egyptian authorities to allow their citizens to leave through this crossing.
Belgium said that it was working to find a solution, but that "for the moment, it is very difficult." The minister said that Gaza was "hermetically sealed, both from Israel and Egypt."
When asked about possibly migratory movements as a result of the conflict, minister said that any refugees leaving Palestine must first be hosted in nearby countries. "There are enough prosperous countries in the region. It's up to them to do the work," he concluded.
