An early morning tip-off by a member of the public was at the centre of the police's apprehension of Monday night's terror attack suspect which left two dead and one injured in Brussels.
A key witness contacted the Brussels police shortly after 08:00 on Tuesday to report that he had spotted the alleged perpetrator of the attack in a cafe in Schaerbeek, according to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspect was shot during the police intervention. After an attempt at resuscitation, he was transferred to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 09:38.
An assault rifle and a bag of clothes were found in the café in Rue Van Oost, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office added.
The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office has been put in charge of the investigation into Tuesday morning’s shoot-out between police officers and the perpetrator.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that the person who was shot was indeed the perpetrator of the attack in Brussels on Monday evening, Abdesalem L., a man of Tunisian origin who was allegedly residing irregularly in Belgium.
The attack claimed the lives of two Swedish nationals and injured a taxi driver.
