Place Woodrow Wilson and Place Graaf van Vlaanderen in the centre of Ghent were evacuated on Wednesday morning after a suspicious package was found, local police said.
The package was discovered at a bus stop on Place Woodrow Wilson, not far from Place Graaf van Vlaanderen. The local police took no risks and set up a security perimeter.
The Flemish public transport company De Lijn announced that the Ghent South bus station had been temporarily closed. The army's bomb disposal service (SEDEE) was called in to assist.
On Tuesday evening, the same procedure was initiated following the discovery of a suspicious suitcase at the Maria Middelares hospital in Ghent. SEDEE and a canine unit were called in but it soon transpired out that the abandoned suitcase simply contained clothes.
