Environmental activists will stage a demonstration in front of Belga News Agency's offices in Brussels next month in protest against Belgian media's climate coverage.
Youth for Climate activist Sandrine Mairesse announced that the protest, which was itself reported by Belga News Agency, would take place in front of Belga's offices because the outlet is "symbolic for the media in Belgium".
"In the event of a heatwave, for example, there will be talk of the climate crisis," Mairesse said. "But the rest of the year it seems less attractive to report on it; it no longer generates as many clicks. Climate summits are also usually only lightly covered. They are usually too average, too general."
The protest will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 18 November. It will feature speeches, meetings and a satirical theatre performance. Around 100 to 200 people are expected to attend.
The protest's announcement follows a recent report by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), which found that the record-breaking heatwaves across much of the world this summer were largely caused by fossil fuel emissions.
"The extreme weather which affected many millions of people in July is unfortunately the harsh reality of climate change and a foretaste of the future," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. "The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is more urgent than ever before. Climate action is not a luxury but a necessity."
