A man arrested in connection with the 16 October attack in Brussels will remain in provisional detention at least for another month, according to Belgium’s federal prosecutor.

The man is suspected of being connected to the weapon used during the terror attack, a claim his lawyer has denied.

The suspect, Lamjed K., born in 1979, was apprehended on 25 October during a raid in Tervuren. On 26 October, he was officially accused of murder, attempted murder in a terrorist context, and involvement with a terrorist group.

Prosecutors allege that he exchanged photographs of an AR-15, the firearm used in the attack, with Abdesalem Lassoued, the perpetrator. He is also suspected of passing on coded contacts.

“My client denies any involvement in these events and will present evidence to refute the charges against him in the coming days,” said defence lawyer Guylain Mafuta Laman, who asked that his client be placed under electronic surveillance instead of detention.

The 16 October terror attack in Sainctelette Square, Brussels, claimed the lives of two Swedish football supporters and seriously injured a third.

Following the shooting, a manhunt was launched for the assailant, who allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack in a social media video posted shortly afterwards.

The suspect was fatally shot by police the following morning in a Schaerbeek bar.
