The US military announced on Friday that one of its aircraft crashed during a training flight over the Eastern Mediterranean, but did not provide information on possible casualties.

A statement released on Saturday by the US Armed Forces Command in Europe (Eucom) said the aircraft "suffered a mishap and went down". The cause of the crash was under investigation. The statement further clarified that the incident was “linked to a training exercise, with no indications of hostile activity.”

Details about the type of aircraft, where it was flying to and from, or the personnel that were involved, were withheld. The statement said only: "Out of respect for the families affected, we will not release further information on the personnel involved at this time," giving the suggestion that fatalities might have been sustained.

Amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the US has recently dispatched a number of warships to the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition, air force squadrons have also been deployed to the region. The USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group were deployed to the eastern Mediterranean in days following the 7 October Hamas terror attack.
