A family of six – a couple and their four children – died in a fire in the municipality of Huy (Liège province) last night. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Late on Tuesday night, the fire brigade was called to a serious house fire, but help came too late for the residents of the building.
"Last night, our town suffered a tragedy," Huy Mayor Eric Dosogne wrote on social media. "Unfortunately, a family that was the victim of a violent fire could not be saved. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and loved ones."
Just before midnight, emergency services were called to a building where people were still thought to be inside, lead firefighter Christophe Jadot told RTBF.
"When we arrived on site, the entire façade of the building was a wall of flames. As we worked and made our way into the building, we found one victim, then two, then three," he said. "Before finally realising that there were six victims in this fire, a complete family. A couple and their four children."
Now, the fire is under control, but has also caused a power outage in the area that was yet not completely resolved this morning. The Liège Public Prosecutor's Office has sent an expert to the scene to make the necessary findings.
