A car-train collision occurred in Limbourg on Sunday evening, disrupting rail services between Genk and Landen.
The empty train crashed into a car at the Velm railway crossing in Saint-Trond, although no injuries were reported. In light of the accident, Infrabel, the railway network manager, has urged all drivers to exercise increased caution near crossings during winter.
The National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB) deployed replacement bus services.
The accident happened at around 18:15. The driver managed to escape from the car before it was hit by the passenger-free train travelling from Leuven to Hasselt.
A team was dispatched to remove the car from the tracks, according to Infrabel. Once removed, an assessment will determine whether the train can continue its journey or needs to be towed away. Furthermore, any damage to the rail infrastructure must be repaired.
