The cost of living remains the main concern for Belgians, according to a new Eurobarometer survey released on Thursday. A total of 57% of respondents mentioned price hikes, inflation and the cost of living as personal challenges.
This trend was reflected nationally too, with 44% citing these as the country’s most significant problem. The survey collected views from 1,016 Belgian residents between 24 October and 12 November. Behind the cost of living, the next most significant concerns were immigration (20%), climate change and environment, and security (both at 16%).
In the run-up to elections in six months, confidence in Belgian political institutions remains relatively low. However, trust in the Federal Parliament (41%) does exceed the average European trust in the European Parliament (EU27: 39%). Likewise, Belgium's Federal Government enjoys a greater confidence (41% of the Belgian population) than the average trust of Europeans in their respective governments (36%).
Despite this, 60% of those surveyed are satisfied with the functioning of Belgium’s democracy.
Lastly, over half of those surveyed (60%) are pleased with the governmental actions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Detailed results show that economic sanctions against the Russian government, corporations and individuals receive broad support (77%). Additionally, financial aid for the purchase and delivery of military equipment to Ukraine enjoys a 60% approval rating.
