Two huge cocaine seizures totalling approximately 3.4 tonnes were made over the past few days in Port Antwerp's Waasland area, the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office reported on Friday.

The first discovery was made on Friday 22 December, on a ship that had arrived from Guayaquil, Ecuador. A container aboard that ship held 1.24 tonnes of cocaine.

On Thursday 28 December, customs officials uncovered 2.16 tonnes of cocaine on a ship docking from Montevideo, Uruguay.

A large-scale drug trafficking investigation has been opened by Antwerp’s Judicial Police.
