The Brussels Jazz Festival returns from 11 to 20 January at Flagey, with Brussels-based pianist and composer Casimir Liberski as the artist in residence for its ninth edition.
Jazz enthusiasts can anticipate performances from both Belgian and international jazz icons who, as per tradition, will enliven the event. The festival aims to present an ‘on-point, youthful, diverse, Belgian and European’ line-up, partnering with Belgian label W.E.R.F. Records to achieve this.
Once again, Flagey provides a platform for a young Belgian jazz artist to make their name known across a wider audience.
The resident artist, Liberski, will develop and showcase three projects. He will present his own music alongside US legends Greg Osby, Larry Grenadier and Nasheet Waits. Exploration of electronica with Roman Hiele and Tolouse Low Trax, as well as a solo performance, has also been announced by the festival organisers in a recent statement.
Spanning ten days, the festival will kick off with a concert by Polish trio Marcin Wasilewski, who will be celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2024.
Brussels Jazz will also collaborate with the Europalia festival, focusing on the Georgian avant-garde this year. The event’s finale on the 14th of January will feature a fusion of traditional Georgian music from Ashiq Nargile and contemporary jazz renditions by Belgian musician Dijf Sanders.
American Kahil El’Zabar will similarly blend tradition with modern jazz rhythms. The festival’s closing is set to be graced by South African artists, Asher Gamedze and Nduduzo Makhathini, the cultural institution concludes.
