A total of 633 people altered their gender registration last year in population records and civil status documents.
This is according to data from the SPF Justice, which was released on Sunday.
The procedure is designed for those who believe their birth certificate does not align with their personal gender identity.
Individuals can declare their required changes in front of a civil status officer in the municipality where they’re registered in the population or foreigner’s registry.
The total number of such changes was higher in 2023 compared to previous years, with 569 in 2022 and 513 in 2021.
Younger age groups majority at altering gender identity
Most of these alterations were made by individuals aged between 18 and 29. For those under 18, there were 52 changes recorded.
Minors can submit a request if they are at least 16 years old, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and possess a certificate from a child or adolescent psychiatrist.
Since January 2018, transgender people no longer need to meet certain medical criteria to modify their gender and first name in civil status documents and the population register.
Previously, if an individual wanted a modification, they had to approach the family court and undertake a complex procedure.
