Brussels’ waste collection service, Bruxelles-Propreté, has halted operations due to heavy snowfall and challenging road conditions.
The stoppage was announced in a statement released late on Wednesday afternoon, and was made by the regional agency responsible for its oversight.
The suspension affected collections of Christmas trees, green waste, and food waste in several municipalities on Wednesday afternoon.
Affected municipalities include: Forest, Anderlecht, Auderghem, Ixelles, Watermael-Boitsfort, Saint-Gilles, City of Brussels (Pentagon), and "some parts" of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre and Molenbeek-Saint-Jean.
The regional agency is asking residents in these areas to leave rubbish bags and trees on the kerb, promising that they will be collected as soon as possible.
The same advice applies to residents whose collections were scheduled for Wednesday evening after 20:00, the agency added.
Meanwhile, the vehicles responsible for removing larger waste items were also forced to turn back due to the weather. Significant disruptions are expected tomorrow, therefore, the agency is asking users scheduled to put out their large waste to refrain from doing so.
The Recypark recycling centres, on the other hand, closed their doors exceptionally at 16:00, the agency further noted.
Bruxelles-Propreté expects similarly challenging conditions tomorrow and is currently assessing its collection strategies, taking into account the difficult road conditions and the significant backlog of work that is anticipated.
