A new set of troops from the Belgian Army relieved the ones stationed in Lithuania this weekend, as part of the operation to bolster NATO’s eastern flank.
The NATO mission was initially motivated by Russia’s occupation of Crimea in 2014, and then subsequently by the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
For the next six months, the Cavalry Scouts, alternatively known as Istar (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance), will represent Belgium within the Forward Land Forces of NATO.
"Together with our partner countries, we contribute to strengthening the security of our European borders," said the battalion.
They replace their peers from the 12/13 Infantry Battalion from Spa.
