The Parliament of Wallonia-Brussels Federation’s Media Commission on Tuesday approved a decree on incorporating new European legislation on digital services into its regulatory framework.

Better known by its acronym DSA, for Digital Services Act, the system compels digital service providers such as Facebook, TikTok and YouTube to implement measures that enhance content moderation and prevent the spread of hate speech or discriminatory rhetoric.

The Act further mandates these platforms to operate with greater transparency concerning their content recommendation algorithms, while prohibiting the targeting of minors with advertisements.

In the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the Conseil Supérieur de l'Audiovisuel (CSA-Higher Audiovisual Council ) will act as regulator. Its responsibilities will include imposing potential sanctions against these platforms, and fines where necessary.

Tuesday afternoon saw the endorsement of the decree by all political groups except for the opposition Belgian Workers Party, PTB, which abstained.
