Liège is one of 64 new cities joining UNESCO’s global ‘learning cities’ network, according to sources at the University of Liège, who led the city’s application.

UNESCO’s concept of a ‘learning city’ is one that effectively marshals resources across all sectors to promote inclusive learning.

It’s a city that facilitates learning for employment and at work, advances individual empowerment and social inclusion, economic development and cultural prosperity, as well as sustainable development.

As a ‘learning city’, Liège is committed to combating the digital divide. Their approach will prioritise inclusive knowledge circulation and knowledge sharing, particularly for young girls, economically disadvantaged populations, and individuals with disabilities.

Critical thinking development, including scientific methodology education from a civic perspective, is also central to the initiative.

Since 2021, the University of Liège has hosted a UNESCO Chair dedicated to examining the role of humanities in knowledge production and transmission.

Until now, UNESCO’s global network of ‘learning cities’ comprised of 292 cities in 76 countries.
