Dubbed the "Ryanair of the roads", low-cost German coach company FlixBus left a significant mark on European travel in 2023.
Transporting nearly 81 million passengers to over 5,600 destinations, FlixBus has announced a year of unprecedented success. The company's turnover skyrocketed by 30%, surpassing the €2 billion milestone, solidifying its position as a global leader in the travel sector.
Remarkably, this surge comes after just 11 years in existence, during which time the young company had to navigate two challenging years impacted by the Covid-19 crisis. While predominantly recognised for its green coaches traversing Belgian motorways, FlixBus is expanding its reach with ventures such as FlixTrain in Germany and Sweden, alongside subsidiaries in North America (Greyhound) and Turkey (Kamil Koç).
FlixBus' formula for success mirrors that of low-cost airlines, prioritising affordability to fill its buses. Offering fares as low as €8 for routes such as Brussels to Amsterdam, FlixBus presents an attractive option, especially with its city centre drop-off points and decent onboard amenities, including Wi-Fi.
Despite the longer travel times compared to planes or high-speed trains, FlixBus' comfort and accessibility make it a preferred choice, particularly among students and budget-conscious travellers.
