A Ghent Prison inmate barricaded himself inside his cell and threatened his cellmate on Monday night, according to the East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office.
The 35-year-old prisoner "refused to allow anyone in," revealed the Public Prosecutor. If attempts were made to enter the cell, he threatened to harm his cellmate. Both the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office were alerted. Special intervention unit members arrived at the scene, along with fire services and emergency personnel.
Negotiations with the man defused the situation overnight, and he ultimately agreed to allow entry into the cell. He was subsequently pacified and removed from the cell. Interrogations are presently underway.
The cellmate was safely released and remained unharmed, confirmed the Prosecutor.
