A group of nine companies have announced plans to assess the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on employment.

The consortium, dominated by tech giants such as Cisco, Accenture, Eightfold, IBM, Intel, Google, Microsoft, Indeed and SAP, intends to train employees in digital capabilities and AI.

This initiative was unveiled in Leuven on Thursday during a 'Technology and Trade' Council between the USA and the EU in the presence of Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition, and US Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Gina Raimondo.

The launch of this partnership occurred during the sixth EU-US summit on technology and trade. "Learning from school age and continued training is crucial," said Vestager, remarking that technology should serve people and not vice versa.

Cooperation between the EU and the US is integral, confirmed the American Secretary of State. She argued that both regions will face comparable challenges as digitisation continues to pervade small and medium-sized enterprises, making joint work logical.

Initially, the partners will evaluate AI’s influence on jobs within the technology and ICT sectors. Subsequently, the findings will be shared among other companies and business leaders. The aim is then to train employees and implement initiatives to better cope with AI in their work.
