A bpost van hit the back of a truck Tuesday morning in Diest, a town in Flemish Brabant, the region that surrounds Brussels. The driver of the van did not survive the impact, the mayor of Diest Christophe De Graef, confirmed on Tuesday.

"The accident happened this morning around 6am on the Leuvensesteenweg between the Action store and the Happy Wok restaurant," said De Graef.

He added that the van driver was taken to the hospital, but medics were unable to save the man who died from his injuries. A traffic expert was since sent to the scene of the impact to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

Measures to minimise accidents

It is unclear what caused the accident, but Belgium has taken steps to ensure better safety for people on the road. Anyone caught using a mobile phone while driving in the Halle-Vilvoorde area in the Flemish district surrounding Brussels could risk losing their driver’s licence between 1 May and 30 June.
