Brussels police have warned about fraudsters who using stickers to apply fake QR codes to local parking meters.

In a statement, Brussels Capital/Ixelles police have cautioned that some "ill-intentioned people" have developed a sticker with a QR code that links to a fraudulent website, which requests banking and personal information.

The stickers are being placed over legitimate QR code posters which drivers scan to purchase parking tickets. Local peacekeepers and police are on the lookout for these fake QR codes. Authorities have also outlined the steps which people should take to protect themselves from this kind of scam.

Firstly, people should check the URL of the website they are brought to after scanning a QR code, and confirm that it matches the official address.

People are advised to avoid downloading applications from "unknown or dubious links", and instead use official platforms such as the App Store or Google Play.

If anything seems unusual or suspicious after scanning a QR code, people are advised to avoid entering personal or banking details.

People can physically inspect a QR code, for example by running their hand over the code on a parking ticket machine to detect any bumps. It is worth inspecting the QR code to ensure it has not been altered, damaged or distorted.

If you think you are a victim of fraud or if you have shared your details on a suspicious site, you should contact your bank immediately and CardStop by phoning 078/170.170. You should also report the incident to the local police.

Authorities advise that if you have concerns you should also have your phone checked for spyware.

If you come across a suspicious QR code around the city, you can send it to the following address: suspect@safeonweb.be.
