Nine people injured in chain reaction crash in Brussels

Several people were injured in a chain reaction crash on a key road in Laeken to the north of Brussels on Tuesday morning.

The Brussels Fire Brigade, the 112 medical services and the City of Brussels/Ixelles police zone were called to the scene of a chain reaction crash at around 08:40 on Tuesday. The collision took place on Avenue Houba de Strooper in Laeken.

"Two cars, a lorry and a bus from the Flemish public transport operator De Lijn were involved," the Brussels Fire Brigade's spokesperson Walter Derieuw said.

"Seven people sustained minor injuries and were evacuated to various hospitals in the region," he added. In addition, the bus and lorry drivers suffered more serious injuries, but fortunately, their condition is stable. "They were also evacuated to a nearby hospital. The lorry driver was extricated from the vehicle using the spinal board."

The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the police. During the rescue operation, one command vehicle, one fire engine, an extrication vehicle, a beaconing vehicle, a mobile emergency and resuscitation service from the Brugmann hospital, and five of the fire brigade's ambulances were sent out.
