An early Friday fire in a metro line 1 tunnel caused STIB to stop all trains between the Crainhem and Montgomery stations, creating a commuting headache during the morning rush hour.

The Brussels public transport operator posted a travel disruption warning about the fire at 07:30. The fire occurred in the tunnel between the Tomberg and Roodebeek stations in the Woluwe-Saint-Lambert area. No injuries were reported, but this section of the line was filled with smoke.

Electricity to the area was cut as firefighters extinguished the blaze and work crews assessed damage to the line. At the time, STIB did not know the cause and could not estimate the length of time for the transit disruption.

Passengers were directed to use the M1 bus line. However, reports on social media quickly told of dozens of frustrated commuters stranded at stations as busses were unable to handle the extra passenger numbers.

By 09:35, STIB tweeted metro line 1 had resumed service.
