Belgium and France are holding commemorative events on Monday to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of George Sand, whose literary, feminist and social legacy continues to resonate nearly a century and a half later.

Born Aurore Dupin in 1804, she became one of the most influential literary figures of the 19th century and remains widely regarded as a pioneer of women's independence and social justice. The celebrated novelist died on 8 June 1876 at the age of 71. ,

In Brussels, tributes will culminate on Monday with events organised by the cultural association L'Hêtre ASBL. The programme concludes three days of conferences, readings and musical performances dedicated to the author.

The organisation will also use the anniversary to present plans for the proposed George Sand House of Wisdom, a permanent cultural space in Brussels intended to promote her ideas and legacy.

Belgium's music world will also take part in the international commemorations later this summer.

On 23 August, the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, conducted by Vahan Mardirossian, will perform at Sand's former estate in the Berry region of central France.

The orchestra will accompany winners of the first International Pleyel Chopin Competition during the 60th Nohant Festival Chopin, reviving the historic connection between Sand and Polish composer Frédéric Chopin.

Over the course of her career, George Sand wrote more than 70 novels, including Indiana and La Mare au Diable. She also maintained extensive correspondence with many of the leading intellectuals of her era, including Alfred de Musset and Gustave Flaubert.

Her financial independence, unconventional lifestyle and advocacy for social justice made her a pioneering figure in French literature.

The anniversary has also revived calls from several French cultural institutions for Sand to be admitted to the Panthéon, where France honours some of its most distinguished historical figures.
