The Brussels prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into a possible case of police brutality in the Brussels commune, Saint-Josse-ten-Node, last week.
Footage of the incident, reported by Bruzz and later confirmed by the prosecutor’s office, was circulated on social media.
The 16-second video shows a person dressed in black being pushed against the wall of a residence by another man, who appears to be wearing a red police armband and holding an object, possibly a telescopic baton.
The man in black receives several blows, after which he collapses and remains motionless. The man with the red armband walks away while other persons pass by.
The incident "took place in Sint-Joost-Ten-Node, in the Brussels-North police zone, during the night of 14 to 15 December on the occasion of the match between France and Morocco,” the public prosecutor’s office said.
“The investigation is ongoing and in the interest of the investigation, the prosecutor’s office will not comment further,” it added.
The chief of police of Brussels-North, Olivier Slosse, informed Bruzz that the prosecutor’s office was immediately notified on 15 December and an investigation launched.
