A young student was brutally raped on 28 December at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)'s Solbosch campus, Sudpresse and La Dernière Heure reported.
The Brussels prosecutor’s office has confirmed that a judicial investigation is underway. It said a suspect has been placed under arrest by the investigating judge. “In the interest of the investigation, we shall not communicate further about this,” the public prosecutor’s office said.
The events took place on 28 December at about 8:45 p.m., near the NO and BC buildings on the Solbosch campus. According to both media, the 21-year-old first-year student was walking along a unlit path regularly used by students when she was assaulted and dragged to a dark place.
There, the perpetrator brutalised her for a long time, but the incident was not recorded by any surveillance camera or noticed by the university’s security service.
The girl was later able to stumble to her parents’ home, near the Fraiteur Bridge, where she collapsed. She was then transferred to the Care Center after Sexual Violence, but is said to be suffering from severe physical and psychological trauma following the attack.
The judicial investigation opened by the Brussels prosecutor’s office has led to the detention of a suspect, who was placed under arrest by the investigating judge.
According to Sudpresse and La Dernière Heure, the victim’s family has expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of ULB, which in their eyes has not done enough to guarantee the safety of its students.
