Flanders and Brussels/Capital Region organised more than 200,000 cultural events and leisure activities in 2022.
This is reflected in data published on Wednesday by Statistiek Vlaanderen, the Flemish statistics office, which noted that the number of activities grew last year after two weaker years marked by the novel Coronavirus and resulting health measures in 2020 and 2021.
More than 180,300 events were organised in Flanders and 23,102 in Brussels/Capital Region last year.
Both regions had experienced a significant dip during the Covid-19 pandemic and, in fact, the number of activities organised in 2022 was still lower than in 2019, the year before the pandemic.
The activities and events listed come from UiTdatabank, a database where organisers in the two regions can promote the activities they plan.
Courses and workshops made up almost a fifth (19%) of the activities in Flanders recorded in the database, followed by sports and music activities, camps and holidays, and guided outings and tours.
Cultural and leisure activities were fairly evenly distributed across Flanders. However, the Coast generally had the highest number of activities per 1000 inhabitants.
The Westhoek and the centres of Leuven, Ghent, Kortrijk and Ostend also had an above-average supply of activities.
