Additional trains will run between 13 May and 28 June due to heavy traffic disruptions caused by works at the Leonard Tunnel.

Railway operators SNCB and Infrabel announced the introduction of "sustainable alternative solutions" for commuters affected by works at one of Brussels' main motorway intersections.

Long-standing operations at the junction have already caused significant disruption but the next phase of the project will result in even more congestion.

From Monday 13 May until Friday 28 June, four extra trains will run during rush hour between Nivelles, Braine-l'Alleud, Waterloo, Rhode-St-Genèse, Etterbeek and Brussels-Luxembourg. At Brussels-Luxembourg, passengers will be able to take other trains to Brussels stations or reach their destination via other public transport means.

Two extra trains will run from Nivelles to Brussels in the morning, one at 06:40 and one at 07:40. Two extra trains will make the return journey at 16:22 and 17:22 in the evening. These trains stop at Nivelles, Lillois, Braine-L'Alleud, Waterloo, Rhode-St-Genèse, Linkebeek, Saint-Job, Vivier d'oie, Boondael, Etterbeek, Germoir and Brussels-Luxembourg.

The Leonard Tunnel has been a political headache for representatives in the surrounding areas. The municipalities of Auderghem, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Watermael-Boitsfort and Uccle have all voiced concern about the project's impact on both traffic congestion and road safety, and Auderghem has even taken Flanders to court for failing to consult with municipalities before deciding to undertake such a disruptive project.
