The most recent – and so far most disruptive – phase of works at the Leonard Tunnel have come to an end and the inner and outer ring roads have reopened to traffic. However, further delays are expected until at least the end of October.
The Leonard Tunnel links the E411 motorway and the Brussels Ring Road in Tervuren and is one of the city's busiest motorway intersections. After closures and traffic disruptions from 8 to 20 May, the inner and outer ring roads reopened at 05:30 on Tuesday, but the Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) warns that the disruptions are far from over.
"Over the next few weeks, we will continue to work at the entrance and exit of the inner ring road," the agency stated. "Inside the tunnel, we will be installing the cable trays and new safety kerbs, so traffic disruption is not yet over."
Since Tuesday, authorities have reverted to the traffic plan that was in place at the beginning of May, which will have the greatest impact on the inner ring road and traffic leaving Brussels via the east of the city.

The AWV advises commuters leaving the capital to opt for the following routes, both eventually arriving at the R0: via Avenue de Tervuren (N3), or via Avenue Franklin Roosevelt (N24), Boulevard du Souverain and Avenue Delleur (R22), then Chaussée de la Hulpe (N275). The agency also recommends that people avoid the roads entirely and work remotely wherever possible.
A more detailed timetable for the next phase of works is currently being drawn up. The project is expected to be completed by early 2025.
