Former Walloon Education Minister Caroline Désir will lead the Socialist Party (PS) in the municipal elections in Ixelles alongside Romain De Reusme.
The local socialist assembly decided on Thursday night, while also endorsing the main elements of a policy programme. This was drafted by 19 thematic committees involving the party’s activists, with input from over 150 Ixelles residents through community meetings.
Serving socialist councillors, Nabil Messaoudi, Nevruz Unal, and Yannick Piquet, are to be third, fourth, and seventh on the list. Meanwhile, president of Social Welfare Center (CPAS), Hassan Chegdani, is placed fifth. Gerard Oosterwijk, the leader for the Vooruit party, will follow the socialist francophone councillor in the ninth position.
Head of the municipal council group, Anne Delvaux, will round off the list in a duo with an opening candidate.
The local PS group assures that the slate respects parity. It consists of committed socialist candidates, four from the Vooruit group, and non-socialist opening candidates who support the local project.
De Reusme says that the PS will champion six priorities: combating excessive rent prices, enhancing cleanliness and safety, supporting purchasing power and services accessibility (including sport vouchers and preferential tariffs), quality public education, and investing in the municipality's public services.
The municipal elections will take place on 13 October. Non-Belgians can also vote in these local elections as long as they register as voters by 31 July.
