The free major open-air film event Bruxelles fait son cinéma is returning to the capital, transforming new areas in Brussels into an open-air cinema every day for three weeks.
As part of what is by now a summer tradition, the non-profit organisation Libération Films is returning to Brussels with its Bruxelles fait son cinéma touring event.
For the first time, the "travelling cinema" will stop in all of the region's 19 communes – up from 15 last year – bringing free open-air screenings in some of the capital's most beloved and popular areas as well as lesser-known locations.
"Launched in 2001, Bruxelles fait son cinéma is a travelling open-air cinema, inspired by an old tradition from Mediterranean countries," the organisers said.
"This activity is intended to be a meeting place where a modest attempt is made to encourage people to live together and to maintain or recreate a friendly relationship between residents."
The event will kick off in Neder-over-Heembeek's Parc Meudon on Wednesday, where the first free screening will be the 2023 black comedy film by Quentin Dupieux titled Yannick. It stars Raphaël Quenard as a heckler who takes a Parisian theatre hostage and rewrites the play under his direction.

Other free screenings under the starry sky include Linda veut du poulet by Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach, Anatomie d'une chute by Justine Triet, the much-lauded Io Capitano telling the tale of a family's migration to Europe and How to Have Sex, the coming-of-age drama film about three British teenage girls who go on a rites-of-passage holiday.
"The aim of the films on offer, in consultation with the cultural departments and/or cultural centres of the partner municipalities, is to bring quality cinema to an audience that is sometimes less informed," the organisation noted.
The free screenings will take place from 26 June to 16 July. They start at dusk (the audience can take their seats or enjoy a drink or snack from 21:00) and are all accessible to people with reduced mobility. All screenings are free, and no booking is needed: seating works on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't arrive late!
