Brussels public transport operator STIB will raise ticket fares from 1 September.
All fares will be indexed except for preferential rates for youths and seniors: under-25s and over-65s will continue to pay €12 for an annual pass.
The measure is part of a budgetary agreement concluded with the Brussels-Capital Region last October. In addition, the reintroduction of automatic indexation is a way for STIB to predict its revenue more accurately.
From 1 September, a single journey will cost €2.20, rising by ten cents from the current price. A day ticket will cost €8 (up by €1), a journey to Brussels Airport will cost €7.50 (up by 50 cents), while a ten-journey ticket for the airport will increase to €49.20 (up by €3.20).
The fare for the taxi bus will increase by 10 cents to €1.80. Day tickets for school groups (under-18s) will rise to €16 (up by €1). A monthly subscription will cost €52 rather than €49 and an annual subscription will rise from €499 to €520.
The net increases amount to 6.9% overall. "If the government decides not to proceed with the annual indexation of fares, the Brussels-Capital Region will fully and recurrently compensate STIB for its shortfall," reads the contract seen by l'Echo. STIB is expected to generate an additional €2.1 million in revenue due to the hikes.
