People living or working in Brussels may have been surprised by the sound of numerous military jets and helicopters flying over the city on Wednesday afternoon.

Aircraft from the Air Component of the Belgian Armed Forces conducted rehearsals for the planned Belgian National Day military parade today, the Belgian Air Force announced on social media.

"Today, our planes will fly over Belgium for a rehearsal of the 21 July air parade. Can you spot them? You can see them in various places, mainly in East and West Flanders," the Air Force said. "A flyover of the capital is planned for just after 16:00."

The military aircraft include several F-16 jets, AWACS, SIAI-Marchetti SF-260 planes, A400Ms, Dassault Falcon 7X planes and Airbus A330 MRRT transport aircraft, as well as two types of military helicopters: the Agusta A109 and NH90 helicopters.

Several of these aircraft are likely to be spotted above Brussels again at some point in the run-up to 21 July.
