The 'Bike in Brussels' fund is investing €1.2 million in 28 cycling initiatives across the Brussels-Capital Region. The aim is to get more residents on bikes and transform the capital into a cycling city.
Among the additions set to be implemented are 1,400 new bicycle parking spaces, three new cycling routes and two bicycle workshops.
The 28 new cycling infrastructure projects are spread across 13 municipalities. In Anderlecht, for instance, there will be ten new bicycle boxes to hold five bikes and five bicycle boxes to store two cargo bikes. Similarly, 20 dedicated bicycle parking spots will be installed at the Lycée Sœur Emmanuelle in the same municipality.
At the Saint-Louis University in Brussels, 38 bicycle parking spaces will be created to encourage staff and students to cycle more frequently. Meanwhile, the architecture faculty of La Cambre Horta at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) plans to build a covered bicycle parking area for 334 bikes. The ULB will provide a bike rack for 54 bikes and a bike workshop.
Similar cycling infrastructure projects are underway in many other municipalities across Brussels. Plans include a new bike parking area near Botanique in Saint-Josse and the implementation of a bike route and bike zone around Rue Josaphat in Schaerbeek. 140 bike parking spots will also be added by the CHIREC hospital group at the Delta site in Auderghem.
The 'Bike in Brussels' fund was established by the King Baudouin Foundation in 2018. Since its creation, 'Bike in Brussels' has supported a total of 120 projects with €7.5 million worth of funding. Although the fund's call for projects has been temporarily suspended to monitor the progress of past initiatives, more projects will be supported in the future.
