Geneva is officially the most expensive city in the world to live in, according to the Cost of Living Index by data company Numbeo. Brussels also made it onto the list.

The Cost of Living Index is a list published every year by Numbeo. While Geneva won the gold medal, a second Swiss city (Zurich) got silver. The rest of the top ten is dominated by US cities, with the only exception being Iceland's Reykjavik at place six.

The Belgian capital also got a spot on the list: Brussels ranks 49th.

According to Numbeo's calculations, the monthly costs for a family of four (without rent) in Brussels are estimated at €3,585.8, while for a single person this would come down to €1,020.4.

This, they said, makes living in Brussels 33.2% less expensive than living in New York. Rent, however, is 71.4% higher in New York than in Brussels, which would make living in the Big Apple a lot more expensive, on top of the already higher cost of living.

To compile the list of 2018 metropolitan cities, several factors such as cost of living, average rent, cost of groceries, restaurants and transport are considered.
