One person dies in Brussels tram collision

One person was killed after having been hit by a tram in north Brussels on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at the Quai des Usines at around 07:30 on Tuesday morning. First reported by BRUZZ, the news was confirmed by the Brussels Fire Brigade.

Following the collision, one person died before emergency services could arrive at the scene and a second individual was taken to hospital. No information about the two individuals has been released.

The collision occurred on the Line 3, which is now disrupted between stops Thomas and Van Praet in both directions.

Translation: In the context of an intervention by the emergency services, we ask you to avoid the following area: Quai des Usines.

Police have also asked drivers and pedestrians to avoid the Quai des Usines until further notice.

"The first usual investigative steps have been taken: a traffic expert has been called in, among other things," spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor's Office Amaury Verhoustraeten told Belga News Agency. "The investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident is ongoing."

Verhoustraeten added that the tram driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
