The suspect in the fatal stabbing on the Boulevard Emile Bockstael in the Brussels municipality of Laken on Friday evening was able to flee after the incident and is being actively sought, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office reported on Saturday.

An investigation has been opened for murder.

The incident took place in front of a Basic Fit branch, just past the Boulevard du Jubilée bridge, a police spokesperson confirmed on Friday evening.

The emergency services arrived on the scene quickly but despite attempts at resuscitation, the victim did not survive his injuries. In order to preserve traces for the investigation, the area around the scene of the stabbing was cordoned off. The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office reported on Saturday.

According to the initial investigation, the victim was stabbed in a building and died of his injuries on the street.

The Public Prosecutor immediately launched an investigation, in which witnesses are being questioned, camera images are being analysed, and experts from the federal judicial police and a medical examiner are being called in.

The suspect is still on the run. The police are actively searching for the perpetrator.
