A person was injured in a shooting in the Brussels municipality of Berchem-Sainte-Agathe on Monday evening, the Brussels-West police zone reported on Tuesday.

The Brussels-West police zone covers the municipalities of Jette, Ganshoren, Koekelberg, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe and Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. It was contacted at around 20:30 on Monday about shots being fired near Chaussée de Gand in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, a key road in the commune which also runs through Molenbeek.

"Upon our arrival, we found a person who had been shot," the police said. "The victim was then transported to the hospital."

The victim sustained injuries to the buttocks but is not believed to be in life-threatening condition.

The police added that the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office will be notified of the incident. "For now, we cannot provide further details as the investigation is ongoing."

It is rare for a shooting to take place in this northwestern commune of Brussels.
