A man has in recent days attacked police officers in Brussels on two separate occasions, according to the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday, 15 October, at the intersection of Rue Royale and Rue des Colonies. The man threw an object at a police patrol from the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone, which caused damage to their vehicle. When a second patrol arrived for reinforcement, he also attacked that vehicle.
"Eventually, the officers managed to handcuff the suspect," said prosecutor’s office spokesperson Yasmina Vanoverschelde. "The suspect was then made available to the prosecutor’s office, which decided to issue a summons for a rapid trial after questioning him."
However, before appearing in court, the man attacked another officer. On the morning of Monday, 21 October, around 09:00, he approached a federal police inspector working for the security directorate of the Palace of Justice in Brussels and attempted to seize his service weapon.
"The suspect also reportedly struck the victim," continued the prosecutor’s office. "The officer called for help from his colleagues, who were able to overpower the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and made available to the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office."
The prosecutor’s office decided to cancel the initial summons and bring the man before an investigating judge.
He has been charged with attempted theft with violence or threats, armed resistance, illegal possession of a weapon, and destruction of vehicles.
