Major checks on vans, trucks and other forms of regular transport reveal that about one in three (30%) vehicles in the Brussels-Capital Region are in violation of the law, Brussels Mobility said in a press release.

Four major checks on transport professionals, including trucks, vans and taxis, were carried out in 2024: in Auderghem, Laeken, Neder-Over-Heembeek and Woluwe. A total of 450 vehicles were checked by the Regional Control Unit for Road Traffic Operation and Transport (GCEV).

The checks show that 30% of transport professionals are in violation of the rules. These include missing the technical inspection or safety accessories, but also serious offences such as overloading the vehicle, unsafely secured cargo, insurance not in order, unlicensed taxis and drink driving.

"These offences affect the road safety of all road users, drivers’ working conditions and create unfair competition in the transport sector," said Olivier Van Craenenbroek of the Regional Control Unit for Road Traffic Operation and Transport (GCEV).

Brussels Mobility therefore sees the high percentage as "an incentive" to continue and further increase checks.
