250 homeless people share festive meal in Brussels' Riches Claires church

Around 250 homeless were welcomed for a Christmas lunch at the Notre-Dame aux Riches Claires church in the heart of Brussels on Christmas Day.

Thanks to numerous volunteers and donations, the Sant’Egidio community provided a festive meal to those who frequently visit its social restaurant throughout the year.

“We hosted a few more guests this year,” Jan De Volder, Secretary General of Sant’Egidio, said.

“These include homeless individuals, those without stable housing, and people in precarious situations. Since the pandemic, we have clearly seen an increase in their numbers.”

The Christmas menu featured four courses: a salmon starter, pumpkin soup, turkey, and dessert. “Everyone also received a gift. For those less mobile, unable to stay long at the table, or who prefer smaller groups, we offered takeaway options.”

About a hundred volunteers helped run the event, preparing and serving the meal. “Throughout the year, we rely on a few dozen volunteers who also dined with the homeless today. But for Christmas, we always have many more volunteers eager to help others during this season,” De Volder added.
