Public transport in Brussels is expected to be "significantly disrupted" on Monday 13 January due to a union action.

Workers are taking to the streets to protest against the European austerity measures and the proposals on the negotiating table for government formation.

The unions at STIB are inviting their members to take part in the national union action on Monday 13 January. "Major disruptions" are expected on the metro, tram and bus networks due to the staff's participation.

The extent of the disruptions cannot be accurately predicted at the moment, but the Brussels transport company will make every effort to ensure "at least some service" and inform its passengers in real time about the situation on the network.

STIB is encouraging people to seek alternative solutions for their travel in Brussels on that day if possible.

The operator will keep its travellers informed as soon as it has additional information via its website, social media channels, the mobile app and waiting time screens at stops and in stations.

Floya, STIB's multi-mobility app, will also suggest modified routes based on the lines that do run. It also offers the chance to find an alternative route using bicycles, scooters, taxis and shared cars.

STIB's Customer Care service will be available from 06:00 on Monday 13 January to answer questions on their social media channels, as well as by phone on 070 23 2000.
