The Saint-Luc University Hospital in the Brussels municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert is dealing with a major computer breakdown, the hospital reported on Tuesday evening. An external cyber attack has been ruled out.

Patients who have already been admitted can still be treated "in complete safety," but most activities on Wednesday have been cancelled – including all consultations and scheduled surgeries as well as all technical examinations.

For admitted patients, technical examinations will continue to the extent possible. Every effort will be made to allow dialysis treatments and chemotherapy to take place as planned. No data has been lost or compromised.

People who come to the emergency room but whose lives are not in danger will be referred to other hospitals. For more information, the hospital refers to its own website saintluc.be.

The teams at Saint-Luc explain that they are working to restore the situation as soon as possible, but that a return to normal will have to take place in stages. There is a possibility that the situation could be restored on Thursday, but this information will have to be confirmed later on Wednesday.

A telephone number has been set up to answer patients' questions (02 764 11 11), but not to reschedule an appointment. The Saint-Luc teams will get back to those affected by cancellations.
