Police searched the Brussels-Charleroi Canal on Wednesday as part of a murder investigation.

The news was first reported by Het Nieuwsblad and has since been confirmed by the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office.

The search was part of the investigation into the violent death of a café owner in Schaerbeek on 3 December. However, the Public Prosecutor said nothing was found.

Several divers and a boat equipped with sonar were deployed for the operation, which lasted about three hours in Schaerbeek.

On 3 December, police were called at around 20:40 to the entrance hall of a building on Avenue du Diamant in Schaerbeek. Upon arrival, officers from the Brussels-North police zone found a woman who had been stabbed: Diana, the café owner. They administered first aid until emergency services arrived, but the victim succumbed to her injuries.

The Public Prosecutor immediately launched a judicial investigation and arrested two suspects that night, including Diana’s ex-partner. Searches were also conducted as part of the investigation. The investigating judge decided to place Diana’s ex-partner under arrest for murder, while the second suspect was released.

Last week, another man was arrested in connection with this case. He has been charged and placed under electronic surveillance.
