The Brussels municipality of Jette is banning smoking in all public parks and other "outdoor leisure areas" on its territory.

Since 1 January, Belgium has banned smoking near sports grounds, amusement parks, crèches, schools and hospitals, among others.

In Jette, that smoking ban will be extended to apply along the entire length of the facades of schools and créches, as well as in all municipal parks.

As a result, it will now be forbidden to smoke in the Roi Baudouin Park, among others, Jette mayor Claire Vandevivere (Les Engagés) told Bruzz.

"There is a national smoking ban in amusement parks," she said. "But there are also many activities in our parks. That is why we chose to extend the smoking ban."

For now, there will be no fines yet if someone does ignore the ban. However, awareness will be raised, including with posters and a campaign on social media.
