Around 60 people were evacuated from an apartment building in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean on Monday morning due to a fire on the eighth floor.

No one was injured in the incident but three apartments are now uninhabitable, according to the Brussels fire brigade.

The fire broke out at around 04:50 on the rear facade of the ten-storey building on Avenue De Roovere in Molenbeek.

"We immediately increased our resources, and a pre-alert for the Medical Intervention Plan (MIP) was activated, which also put the Red Cross on standby," said Brussels fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw.

Approximately 60 residents were evacuated and gathered in the entrance hall of a nearby building and the nearby Gare de l’Ouest metro station.

The spokesperson added that the fire spread through a technical conduit to the kitchen of a ninth-floor apartment and was extinguished using a ladder truck and internal firefighting efforts.

The police and municipal services are assisting those affected with temporary housing, while other residents were allowed to return to their homes after firefighters ventilated and checked for carbon monoxide.
