The Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone has issued almost 15,000 fines for breaking the speed limit in the first three months of this year. But one stands out among the thousands after being caught doing 158 km/h in the centre of Brussels.
The offender was caught on the Allée Verte in the Northern Quarter, where the speed limit is 50 km/h. Another person was fined for driving 89 km/h on the Avenue de Meysse, where the speed limit is 30 km/h.
In the first quarter of this year, the traffic directorate of the central police zone fined a total of 14,832 drivers for speeding. Many were caught during 95 targeted speed checks at 38 different locations.
During those actions, 7,346 drivers were fined for driving too fast. "In 68 cases, their driving licences were immediately withdrawn for two weeks," a police statement read.

A little over seven million drivers were checked by fixed cameras in the City of Brussels and Ixelles, of whom a total of 4,785 drivers were caught with flashes for speeding or failing to stop at red lights. Another 2,701 drivers were caught by the LIDAR "super-speed camera."
6,504 drivers were caught speeding at traffic controls in the Tunnel de la Porte de Hal, the Bailli Tunnel and the Louise tunnel. In the latter, one person was caught driving 141 km/h, 91 km/h over the speed limit.
