The ceilings of the second basement floor in the Brussels Justice Palace have collapsed, meaning that detainees' access to the courtrooms was not secured on Thursday.

The collapse happened on Wednesday and was reportedly caused by facade works on the building. Water entered the basement floors, making access to certain areas unsafe, reports Belga News Agency.

"The premises are closed and we are awaiting the arrival of a stability engineer," Eddy Quaino of the police told Le Soir, adding that there were no injuries.

The damage prevents police officers from using the cell corridors to the courtrooms. As a result, only one detainee could be transferred to the Justice Palace on Thursday.

This is not the first time the courthouse has had problems with collapses. In September 2018, part of the ceiling of the registry of the Court of Cassation had fallen.
